Texas State takes down oklahoma state
Texas State baseball upsets Oklahoma State 4-2 at Globe Life field in Arlington on Tuesday. The Oklahoma State Cowboys came into the game ranked 19th in the country, while the Texas State Bobcats are unranked.
Texas State's Ryne Farber led off the game by getting hit in the foot with an 0-2 slider. After a ball advanced him to second, Ethan Farris hit a single through the right side to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.
Avery Ortiz got the offense started for the Cowboys with a single past the third baseman on an 0-2 count. Ortiz stole second with one out, then advanced to third on a sac fly to center field. Jayson Jones struck out looking With a runner on third and two outs on a borderline pitch.
Colin Brueggemann doubled to the left-center field gap to start the Cowboys half of the second inning. Ian Daughtery then walked after a long at bat the next three guys were unable to get the job done, and stranded runners at second and third.
The Cowboys once again stranded a runner in scoring position in the third inning. The game went all the way to the sixth inning with the Bobcats holding their 1-0 lead. The Bobcats only produced one base runner from the 2nd to 6th inning.
Daugherty doubled down the left field line with one out in the sixth to get a guy into scoring position for the Cowboys. Garrett Shull came off the bench to pinch hit for Donovan LaSalle. He singled up the middle to score Daugherty, and put the Cowboys on the board.
The inning ended on a double play that saw Brock Thompson strike out, and Shull getting thrown out by Catcher Theo Krumm trying to steal second.
The Cowboys once again got a runner to scoring position in the seventh inning, but were unable to capitalize on the opportunity.
Samson Pugh singled, and Krummer was intentionally walked to start off the eight for the Bobcats. Farber followed up the walk with a single up the middle to load the bases. A wild pitch scored the runner from third and advanced the other two. Another wild pitch scored the runner from third. A catcher's interference scored the third run of the inning to make the game 4-1 Bobcats.
Daugherty walked with one out, and advanced to second base on a Thompson walk. The Cowboys could not take advantage, and stranded another runner in scoring position.
After the Bobcats went quietly in the top of the 9th, Avery Ortiz started off the Cowboys half with a walk. Aidan Meola immediately doubled to put runners on second and third. Jayson Jones grounded out to the third baseman to score Ortiz, but it left the Cowboys down to their last out. Brueggeman singled to advance Meola to third, but Daugherty then struck out to end the game.
The story of the game was Oklahoma state leaving 13 runners on base, while Texas State only left seven on.
The loss drops OSU to 1-3 on the season, while the Bobcats are now 4-0 on the young season.
