Devonta Smith adds Super Bowl to long list of accolades
Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver, Devonta Smith, is one of the most successful professional football players of all time, and he is only 26 years old. Smith sits at the top of a lonely throne, becoming just the fifth player ever to win a Super Bowl, a national championship, and a Heisman trophy. He is also the first wide receiver to win the Heisman since Desmond Howard in 1991.
Smith was the receiver of the game-winning touchdown in the 2018 national championship game against Georgia, his only catch of the game. In the 2020 season Devonta Smith played one of the most highly touted seasons for a wide receiver in the history of college football. To cap off the year, in which he became just the fourth wide receiver to win the Heisman, Smith boasted 12 receptions and three touchdowns in the 2020 national championship against Ohio State. That season Smith led the nation in receptions, yards, and touchdowns, with 117, 1,856, and 23 respectively.
“And just to all the young kids out there that's not the biggest, not the strongest, just keep pushing because I'm not the biggest. I've been doubted a lot just because of my size, and really it just comes down to you put your mind to it, you can do it.” Said Smith in his Heisman acceptance speech. “No job is too big. If you put your mind to it, you can do it, and just keep believing in God, and you'll get where you want to be.”
Most recently, in the Super Bowl, Devonta Smith led the Eagles in receiving yards against the Chiefs with 69, capped off with a 46-yard touchdown late in the third quarter. This made Smith the first Heisman winner to record a touchdown reception in the big game. This catch was also one yard longer than his previous Heisman record for longest Super Bowl reception, which he set in the 2023 Super Bowl. He also boasts a franchise record with the Eagles, with 595 career postseason receiving yards.
“A lot of emotions coming back home, playing in front of my family and things like that, um, it’s been a lot for me man.” Said the Louisiana native after winning Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans. “But you know I’m grateful. I’m blessed. God is the greatest, you know, wouldn’t be here without him.”
At just 26, Smith has amassed one of the most unique sets of accolades in the sport of football. Now a Super Bowl champion, Smith will return to the field with the Eagles for the 2025 season with another accomplishment under his belt, and the same mindset he’s used to get him there.
