Texas A&M upset by Cal Poly

The Cal Poly Mustangs visited College Station on Sunday to take on the number one ranked Texas A&M Aggies. The Aggies came into play at 5-0, while the Mustangs came into play at 2-4.

The bottom of the second inning saw the first baserunners of the game for either team. Aggies outfielder Hayden Schott started the inning off with a single. Senior Gavin Kash followed that up with a fielder's choice. They put together two straight singles by Kaeden Kent and then Terrence Kiel II to load the bases. The rally was for not as Jacob Galloway flied out to Right Field to end the inning.

Cal Poly saw their first base runner in the top of the third inning as Zach Daudet singled to left field with two outs. The Mustangs stranded him at third to end the inning with the score still tied at 0-0.

With one out in the bottom of the third Jace Laviollette walked. Wyatt Hensler immediately hit a single to left center field that advanced Laviolette to third. Schott hit an RBI single to put the aggies on the board. A wild pitch put two runners into scoring position for the Aggies, which set up a Kash RBI groundout to put the Aggies up 2-0.

Both teams went quietly in the fourth inning. Cal Poly started off the fifth with a leadoff single from Casey Murray Jr. but once again could not capitalize with runners on.

The Mustangs started off the sixth inning by once again getting the leadoff guy on, by way of a Daudet walk. Freshman Dante Vachini followed up the walk with a bunt single to put runners on first and second with no outs. A Nate Castellon sac bunt moved the runners to second and third with one out. The next two Mustangs struck out, then grounded out to leave the runners stranded on second and third still down two.

The game went into the top of the ninth inning still at a 2-0 score. Cal Poly had their backs against the wall down to their final three outs.

Ryan Fenn led off the inning with a single right center field. Jack Collins Homered on the first pitch that he saw to tie the game up. Murray then reached base on an error by the third baseman, and was advanced into scoring position with a sac bunt. He advanced to third on a wild pitch, then was driven in on a fielder's choice to give the Mustangs a 3-2 lead.

Tanner Sagouspe stayed in the game to pitch the ninth inning after relieving Ethan Marmie in the eighth inning. Sagouspe shut the door on the Aggies by retiring the side in order to give Cal Poly the comeback win.

This upset was the first time that Cal Poly has beaten a number one ranked team since 2020.

Ethan Marmie only allowed two runs through seven innings for the Mustangs, while Aggies pitcher Myles Patton threw seven scoreless innings.

Cal Poly avoided the sweep with the win. They now sit at 2-5, and will host Seton Hall on February 28.

The Aggies fell to 5-1 on the young season with the loss. Expect the Aggies to drop out of the number one spot in the rankings with the combination of this loss, as well as only beating Cal Poly 4-3 on Saturday.

The Aggies will host Texas State for a midweek game on Tuesday with hopes to get back on track.
