Kyrie Irving out for the season
The Dallas Mavericks faced yet another devastating blow during Monday night's game against the Kings. Star point guard Kyrie Irving drove to the hoop on a layup attempt. He took a hop step which led to a shooting foul.
He immediately went to the ground. He was seen face down, holding his knee. His teammates surrounded him as the trainers came out to see him. It was apparent that something was seriously wrong.
The replay showed his knee hyperextending as he planted his left foot. The trainers along with Anthony Davis helped him off of the court. As they were heading back to the locker room they sharply turned back toward the court. He was helped to the free throw line to take his free throws before leaving the game.
He mouthed “thank you GOD” before sinking both free throws. He was then helped off of the court, and stayed in the locker room for the remainder of the game.
Reports came out after getting an MRI done that he had torn his ACL. This injury will keep him out for the remainder of the season.
This news is only the latest in a dreadful stretch for the Mavericks. They have been without their center core of Daniel Gafford and Dereck Lively II since early February.
To make matters worse for Dallas, their all NBA talent Anthony Davis got injured in the second half of his first game with the team on February 8. He has not appeared in a game since. There has been talks from inside of the organization that he may be shut down for the season.
Dallas currently sits at 10th in the Western conference with a 32-31 record. They have a long road ahead if they plan to make the playoffs this season.
Expect players like Spencer Dinwiddie, Klay Thompson, and Pj Washington to take on a larger role as the season progresses. Dallas will also need young pieces such as Max Christie, Jaden Hardy, and Olivier-Maxence Prosperto step up as the season progresses.
