Ohio State Overcomes Slow Start to Dominate Iowa, Sets Sights on Showdown with Oregon

In a commanding display of offensive and defensive prowess, No. 3 Ohio State overcame a sluggish start to trounce Iowa 35-7 on Saturday, improving their record to 5-0 and 2-0 in Big Ten play. Despite only leading 7-0 at halftime, the Buckeyes exploded for 21 unanswered points in the third quarter, decisively putting the game out of reach.

Quarterback Will Howard showcased his versatility, completing 21 of 25 passes for 209 yards and four touchdowns while also rushing for 28 yards and a score. His efficient performance was bolstered by a strong showing from the Buckeye receiving corps, particularly Emeka Egbuka, who caught three touchdown passes, and Jeremiah Smith, who made a spectacular one-handed grab for another score.

Ohio State’s ground game was equally impressive, racking up 203 rushing yards. Quinshon Judkins led the way with 78 yards, while TreVeyon Henderson added 61 yards, contributing to a balanced offensive attack that kept the Hawkeyes’ defense on their heels.

Iowa’s offense struggled to find rhythm throughout the game, especially Kaleb Johnson, who entered the matchup as one of the most prolific running backs in college football. After gaining over 100 yards in each of Iowa's first four games, Johnson was limited to just 19 yards on eight carries in the first half. He finished with 86 yards and a late touchdown, but it was clear that Ohio State's defense had effectively neutralized him.

The Buckeyes' defensive performance was their best of the season, holding Iowa to a mere 226 total yards. They sacked Iowa quarterback Cade McNamara three times, forcing him to fumble the ball twice, and intercepted him once, underscoring their dominance on that side of the ball.

With this impressive win, Ohio State is poised to move up in the rankings, especially following the shocking loss of top-ranked Alabama to Vanderbilt. The Buckeyes will look to maintain their momentum as they prepare for a pivotal matchup against No. 6 Oregon next Saturday night, which promises to be the game of the week.

As Ohio State continues its quest for a playoff spot, this victory against Iowa serves as a statement: they are a team to be reckoned with in the hunt for a national championship. With a potent offense and a stifling defense, the Buckeyes are ready to face the challenges ahead.
