Michigan State vs. Maryland
The number eight ranked Michigan State Spartans traveled to Maryland to face the number 16 Maryland Terrapins on Wednesday night. The Spartans came in off of a three game win streak. The Terrapins came in off of a four game win streak.
The game was a back and forth battle through and through. The defense showed up in a major way for both teams. The first half was filled with turnovers, and contested shots from both sides. The first half ended at 23-21 Maryland.
The second half was much more of the same. The largest lead of the entire game was nine points when Michigan State took a 52-43 lead with 5:24 left. Michigan State only scored three points over the next five minutes.
Maryland came storming back over the final five minutes of the game. They slowly climbed back by locking the Spartans down, and hitting timely shots. With 42 seconds left in the game, Ja’Kobi Gillespie hit two free throws to tie the game up at 55 a piece.
The Spartans missed a layup, then the Terrapins followed it up with a missed three pointer. Jaxon Kohler got the defensive rebound for the Spartans with two seconds left. He passed it out to Tre Holloan who drained the shot from half court to give the Spartans the 58-55 win.
The Terrapin crowd was in disbelief as they watched the shot go through the net. The buzzer beater redeemed Holloman’s tough 3-12 shooting night.
The Spartans were led by freshman guard Jase Richardson who finished the game with 15 points and eight rebounds. He was the only Spartan who scored in the double digits in the game.
The Terrapins had three players in double digits. They were led by sophomore guard Rodney Rice who had 20 points in 39 minutes. They got zero points off of the bench in the game.
The Spartans host the eleven ranked Wisconsin Badgers on Sunday.
