Illinois Tops Michigan 21-7 in Memorial Stadium Rededication Game
The Illinois Fighting Illini defeated the No. 24 Michigan Wolverines 21-7 on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at a packed Memorial Stadium during its 100th-anniversary game. Illinois quarterback Luke Altmyer led the way with 236 passing yards and two touchdowns, while the Illinois defense held Michigan to just one score.
The Wolverines struggled to generate offense, as Illinois dominated in key moments, forcing turnovers and controlling the tempo throughout the game. Michigan’s lone touchdown came late in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to close the gap.
"We knew we had to be aggressive and play disciplined football, and the guys executed that plan perfectly," said Illinois head coach Bret Bielema after the win. "It’s a great win, especially on such a historic day for our program."
Michigan’s quarterback Davis Warren, who struggled against Illinois’ aggressive defense, praised the Illini postgame. "They were tough up front, and we just couldn’t get into a rhythm offensively."
Illinois improves to 6-2 on the season and looks to continue its Big Ten run, while Michigan falls to 5-3, facing questions about their offensive consistency as they move deeper into conference play.
